Blanton Hired as Coach at Nicholls State

May 23, 2002

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - Ricky Blanton, a star on LSU's Final Four team in 1986, was hired Thursday as basketball coach at Nicholls State.

Blanton replaces Rickey Broussard, who resigned earlier this month to become an assistant coach at LSU under John Brady.

Blanton has spent the last two years directing a basketball academy he created in Baton Rouge. Before that, he spent time as an assistant coach at Utah State.

He was an assistant at LSU under former coach Dale Brown for the 1996-97 season.

Blanton finished his career with 1,501 points and 766 rebounds, ranking 12th in both categories in LSU records.

He was a second-round draft pick by the Phoenix Suns in 1989 and also spent time with the Chicago Bulls.

Broussard was 150-183 at Nicholls.
