KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Tennessee, Saint Anselm College, Wheaton College, Spring Arbor University and South Suburban College have been selected as the NABC Teams of the Week for games played Dec. 3-9.
NCAA Division I – Tennessee
Head Coach: Rick Barnes
In a showdown of top-10 teams, Tennessee outlasted top-ranked and previously unbeaten Gonzaga on Sunday, 76-73, marking the Vols’ fifth all-time win over a No. 1-ranked opponent. Led by 30 points from Admiral Schofield, Tennessee closed the game on an 11-5 run and held Gonzaga to no field goals during the final 4:16 of the contest. The Vols are now 7-1 this season.
NCAA Division II – Saint Anselm (N.H.)
Head Coach: Keith Dickson
Saint Anselm earned a pair of victories last week, winning at St. Michael’s on Tuesday before beating 10th-ranked Bentley on Saturday. The Hawks shot 55.7-percent from the field in their 95-72 victory over St. Michael’s, and then scored the game’s first 11 points in an 84-74 win over Bentley. Saint Anselm has opened with eight-straight wins – the longest undefeated streak to start a season in program history.
NCAA Division III – Wheaton (Ill.)
Head Coach: Mike Schauer
Wheaten went 2-0 last week, headlined by a buzzer-beating victory at No. 8 Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday. Down one with five seconds remaining, senior Aston Francis hit a three-pointer as time expired to give the Thunder a 90-88 win over their previously-unbeaten CCIW rival. Wheaton followed that performance with a 92-81 win over Olivet on Saturday, which improved the Thunder to 7-2 overall.
NAIA – Spring Arbor (Mich.)
Head Coach: Ryan Cottingham
Spring Arbor claimed two wins over top-five opponents last week, outlasting No. 5 Marian 89-86 in overtime on Tuesday before beating top-ranked Indiana Wesleyan 96-86 on Saturday. The Cougars shot 62.3-percent from the field against Marian and 53.7-percent against Indiana Wesleyan on their way to improving to 12-2 overall and 4-1 in the Crossroads League.
NJCAA/Two-Year Colleges – South Suburban (Ill.)
Head Coach: John Pigatti
South Suburban improved to 13-0 this season with a pair of road wins last week. The Bulldogs beat Morton 90-79 on Tuesday before running past Kalamazoo Valley 86-46 on Saturday. All but one of SSC’s 13 victories have come by double digits, and the Bulldogs have won their last six games by a combined score of 489-338.
