Odom gets 2-Year contract extension
Jan. 8, 2007
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -South Carolina coach Dave Odom received a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the Gamecocks through the 2009-10 season. The university approved a deal Monday that extends Odom at his base salary of $170,242 a year. Odom makes about $700,000 a year including television, radio and other compensation. He also has contractual incentives that could add an extra $200,000 or so to that total. The agreement also lowers buyout amounts for Odom and the university in the final year of the extension. The school would have to pay $250,000 per year remaining on the contract except for the final season, when the figure drops to $50,000.
The same terms apply to Odom should he terminate the contract for another NCAA head coaching job. If Odom leaves for another reason, he wouldn't owe the school anything. "While I am proud of many of the accomplishments of our past teams, I know that we have much to do to raise Carolina Basketball to a championship level in the SEC and one which is respected nationally," Odom said in a statement. "I believe our program is positioned to make the move." Odom has won the past two NIT championships with South Carolina. The Gamecocks (10-3) fell to No. 9 Kansas, 70-54, on Sunday. They open Southeastern Conference play against Georgia on Wednesday night. Before the extension, Odom's contract ran through the 2007-08 season. In six seasons since coming over from Wake Forest, Odom has a record of 110-73, a winning percentage of just over 60 percent. Odom has coached 21 seasons total between Wake Forest and South Carolina with a career mark of 388-247. He's gone to nine NCAA tournaments and made six NITs, also winning that title with the Demon Deacons in 2000. "I love Carolina and enthusiastically look forward to the future as we work together to make all Gamecock fans proud," Odom said.
