Coaches Making a Difference
College basketball coaches spend hours planning and preparing for their opponents. Each year members of the NABC also spend tireless hours to prepare a game plan off the court in the fight against cancer through their involvement with the Coaches vs. Cancer program.
As a coach, you can:
- Serve as a local/national spokesperson to heighten visibility of the American Cancer Society's services for those who need answers, information and support
- Advocate for responsible public policy issues related to cancer
- Increase awareness of the importance of early detection, and healthy lifestyle choices
- Raise funds in the fight against cancer to sustain the mission of the American Cancer Society

Coaches vs. Cancer Local Activities
"Basket Ball" Gala
The "Basket Ball" is a black tie affair that offers an exciting evening of dancing, dinner, celebrity appearances and one of a kind auction items. Syracuse University Head Coach, Jim Boeheim and wife, Juli created this event in 2000, and each year the event is bigger and better than the last. Coach Mark Few of Gonzaga University hosted their first Basket Ball to resounding success in 2003. This unique and fun event raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for local ACS programs and services and is promoted heavily through local sponsorship, print, television and radio media. Coaches and their wives are encouraged to contact the local ACS to find out how they can make this "the" party in town!
Tip-off Breakfast
The six coaches of the Philadelphia Ivy League schools, known as the Philadelphia Six, unite each year to tip-off the basketball season facing the same opponent - cancer. This one of a kind event for basketball fans offers an opportunity to hear firsthand from the coaches on predictions for the season. Other coaches from around the country hold these events, bringing fans closer to the game and the fight against cancer.
Local Golf Tournaments
Many coaches across the country host annual golf tournaments to benefit the American Cancer Society. The event offers a day of competition and camaraderie with a cause. These events provide the opportunity to mix two favorite activities for many fans - basketball and golf - and the chance to play with the coaches. Many notable coaches such as the Philadelphia elite six coaches, Pete Gillen, formerly of the University of Virginia, Ed DeChellis of Penn State, and Coach Mike Brey of Notre Dame takes the competition off the court to the course each year.
Coaches vs. Cancer Night
Several schools pick one game during the season to designate as "Coaches vs. Cancer Night," where the coach will appeal to the fans and community to join his team in the fight against cancer. Funds are raised in various ways on campus and in the community, such as an additional charge to admission, pledges, flat donations, shoot-out contests, etc.
The event is often sponsored by a local business and promoted on the coach show, and through print, television and radio media.
High School Basketball Tournaments
High school coaches are also involved in the program, hosting a Coaches vs. Cancer tournament at their school or simply renaming an existing tournament to benefit the American Cancer Society. The host coach will invite four notable high schools to participate in a two-day event that may be held during the season, or planned as a holiday (Thanksgiving or Christmas) tournament. Coach Rich Basirico, Head Coach at Hilton Head Preparatory renamed an existing event that has created overwhelming visibility for the American Cancer Society in the two days of competition. Elmira High School in Elmira, New York hosts a three-day holiday tournament that features a tobacco education clinic.
Join your coach and share his commitment to build a cancer-free future.
