911 Relief Effort
Coaches respond to the attack on America and the war on terrorism By Jim Haney The NABC Board of Directors presents the following recommendations as a support of the victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, their families and the men and women of the armed services who are engaged in the campaign against terrorism. The Board is recommending three items for consideration and action. The Board is recommending that each basketball team have an American flag patch on the jersey. In an effort to create uniformity, the size of the patch suggested is 1 1/2" x 2 3/4" to be placed at the base of the left arm strap and above the base of the neckline. This is the location on the jersey that has been approved by the NCAA Basketball Rules Committee. The patches come in larger sizes but will not fit appropriately within the approved area on the jersey. We suggest you contact a local distributor or Condor Flag Company. The cost quoted by Condor Flag Company is 93 cents per flag patch. Condor Flag Co. During the 2001 NABC Convention in Minneapolis, the Board recommended a significant change to the "One Nation, One Flag, One People" program. Based on the events of Sept. 11 and the war on terrorism "One Nation" has been rewritten to address the events of Sept. 11 and the war on terrorism. The key to the program for the 2001-02 season is to have the national anthem played just prior to player introductions. You will recall the plan a year ago was approximately 12 minutes prior to player introductions. We believe it is extremely valuable to have coaches and student-athletes actively participate in supporting the patriotic movement that has swept across our nation. Fund Raising or Related Team Activity to Support the Families of Those Killed in the Terrorist Attacks
Several coaches have contacted the NABC office with recommendations of raising money. For example, Nolan Richardson is raising money by asking his assistant coaches and players to make contributions. He is matching the money the assistant coaches contribute. Nolan is also soliciting contributions from Arkansas students attending an upcoming exhibition game. The American Red Cross is providing workers to receive the contributions. You may wish to do something similar. The coaches at Washington State have come up with a one-time money raiser called "Free Throws for Heroes." You may wish to follow their lead. We are certain there are other good ideas. Whatever you have done or decide to do, we ask that you advise us of your program so we can note your efforts on www.NABC.com. |
