Miles for Myles

OVERVIEW

MILES for MYLES is an initiative designed to perpetuate the legacy of leadership of the late NCAA President Myles Brand and to carry on with his valiant fight against pancreatic cancer.

Developed by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), which has been joined by the WBCA, NCAA and NACDA as partners, MILES for MYLES provides an opportunity for the collegiate athletic community to demonstrate its solidarity and to raise awareness and contribute funds for cancer research, specifically in the area of pancreatic cancer.

What: We are asking each NCAA college or university to conduct a three-mile race or walk on your campus with the distance signifying the three divisions of NCAA athletics.

When: Saturday, November 7, 2009, with an alternative date of Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009.

Who: College/University presidents, faculty athletic representatives, directors of athletics, athletic administrators, coaches, student-athletes and the general public.

Donation: Each person participating in the MILES for MYLES event is asked to donate $3 ($1 per mile) which will go directly to three charitable efforts to fight pancreatic cancer. All proceeds go to:

Coaches vs. Cancer -
A partnership between the NABC and American Cancer Society

The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund

The Myles Brand Chair in Cancer Research
at the Indiana University School of Medicine

"Donations to NABC are not deductible as charitable contribution for Federal Income tax purposes."

Mission: To engage all campus communities across America in this display of solidarity as a tribute to Dr. Myles Brand. In his seven years as president of the NCAA, Dr. Brand was dedicated to enhancing the academic environment for student-athletes while at the same time emphasizing the value of diversity and inclusion. The first university president to serve as NCAA president, he led efforts to address the fiscal responsibilities in college athletics and the integration of the values of higher education with the importance of student participation in athletics.
