Santa Clara's Keating Urges Coaches to be Hands Free While Recruiting

June 28, 2010

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - A new father, Santa Clara head basketball coach Kerry Keating sees things a little differently these days. Maybe it's because his two-month old son is one of the 30+ kids under five years old whose parents work for the Bronco Athletic Department. Recently Keating and his, Treena, saw the story about the little girl who was 15 bike pedals away from her home before being hit and killed by a texting driver and also read about Oprah Winfrey's national "No Phone Zone" campaign to discourage distracted driving. And it sparked an idea for Keating.

Keating and his staff are now leading the charge in asking college basketball coaches to go hands-free while driving this summer. The Bronco head coach is issuing a challenge to the college basketball community and is urging all college basketball coaches to call and verbally "sign" the hands-free agreement prior to July 6, 2010, the start of the college basketball summer recruiting period.

In support of Santa Clara University and Coach Keating's hands-free initiative, Jawbone has created a special offer for college basketball coaches and staff. College basketball coaches will receive $30.00 off any Jawbone ICONTM Bluetooth headset (retail $99.99) along with free standard shipping. The Jawbone ICONTM Bluetooth headset allows the person to text hands free while driving. For more information, , Click here.

"We are extremely busy in July traveling and recruiting, so time is of the essence to encourage safer driving this summer. Texting has become the primary mode of communication in gyms while recruiting and unfortunately texting sometimes can carry over outside the gym and into the car," said Keating. "Driving while texting is proving to be worse than driving while intoxicated. I hope that the coaches will take this unique opportunity to lead by example. As a staff which prides itself on technological appreciation, in addition to being located in the heart of Silicon Valley, we asked our friends at Jawbone to join us by providing an added incentive for college coaches to work safer and smarter - hands free. Coaches don't have to purchase anything to participate. Either way we're encouraging them to do the right thing!"
