Hunter to Lead Coaches in Bare Feet for Samaritan's Feet
Jan. 7, 2009
It's been almost a year since NABC Board member and IUPUI Head Coach Ron Hunter coached his team in bare feet for a game against Oakland University.
This year, however, Hunter, won't be the only coach roaming the sideline without socks and shoes.
Coaches from the Horizon League, the Summit League and the Mid-American Conference, along with numerous other high school and college coaches will go barefoot with Hunter on the weekend of Jan. 17, 2009, to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. These coaches seek to raise awareness and donations of shoes for Samaritan's Feet, an international ministry focused on bringing a life-changing message of hope to youth and children through sports and recreational adventures. Samaritan's Feet provides relief to hurting people displaced due to poverty, ravaging wars and religious persecution and demonstrates its compassion by washing and equipping children's feet with shoes.
Hunter, who took an entourage including his staff and some players for shoe distribution in Lima, Peru, last summer, was honored as the Person of the Week with Charles Gibson on ABC's World News Tonight on Dec. 26, and the program will be featured on CNN on Jan. 16.
Samaritan's Feet will conduct two major shoe distributions on MLK Day (Jan 19th) in Indianapolis and plans to distribute a total of 1,000 pairs of shoes to needy families there.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Hunter and Samaritan's Feet are seeking coaches from across the nation to take part in the effort on or around Jan. 17. Coaches who would like to participate and need additional information should contact Todd Melloh of Samaritan's Feet at 317-417-3525 or email tmelloh@samaritansfeet.org.
