Two of this year's Final Four coaches--Michigan State's Tom Izzo and Duke's Mike Krzyzewski--enter the national semifinals at Minneapolis ranking among the top four all-time in NCAA Tournament winning percentage. Krzyzewski will still trail Izzo, San Francisco's Phil Woolpert and UCLA's John Wooden in NCAA playoff winning percentage even if the Blue Devils capture this year's title. The Spartans will need to successfully defending their crown in order for Izzo to remain atop the list. Here are the 10 coaches to win more than 70 percent of their playoff games (minimum of 15 decisions):
Tom Izzo, Michigan State 16-2 .889
First two defeats were against ACC Final Four teams (North Carolina in 1998 and Duke in 1999).
Phil Woolpert, San Francisco 13-2 .867
Captured the 1956 NCAA title by an average of 14 points although K.C. Jones was ineligible for the playoffs.
John Wooden, UCLA 47-10 .825
Had an anemic 3-9 playoff record before reeling off an amazing 38 straight victories in the tournament.
Mike Krzyzewski, Duke 54-14 .794
Won all 11 NCAA playoff games against Big East and Big Ten teams from 1990 through 1994.
Rick Pitino, Boston U./Providence/Kentucky 26-7 .788
Three of new Louisville mentor's wins came against former Final Four coaches--UAB's Gene Bartow (with Memphis State and UCLA), Georgetown's John Thompson and Johnny Orr (with Michigan).
Fred Taylor, Ohio State 14-4 .778
His 1960 NCAA champion is the only titlist to win all of its tournament games by more than 15 points.
Steve Fisher, Michigan 20-6 .769
Second-year coach at San Diego State won his first 12 NCAA playoff games decided by fewer than six points or in overtime.
Larry Brown, UCLA/Kansas 19-6 .760
Became the only coach to capture an NCAA crown (Kansas '88) between NBA divisional championships.
Tubby Smith, Tulsa/Georgia/Kentucky 18-7 .720
Only coach to take three straight teams to the Sweet 16 although they were each seeded sixth or worse (Tulsa in 1994 and 1995 before Georgia in 1996).
Dean Smith, North Carolina 65-27 .707
Only coach to be eliminated from tournament by champion on at least seven occasions (1968, 1977, 1981, 1985, 1986, 1989 and 1997).
