Launch Situation Defense

In recent years we have begun to play more of what we call, for lack of a better term, situation defense. That is, in some instances we play defense according to what the situation calls for rather than by rules "set in stone." This is especially true in regard to our post defense. We have traditionally covered the low post on the top side when the ball is above the free throw line extended and on the bottom side when the ball is below this line.

Several years ago we faced an All-American that we felt we could not cover and stop by playing him in this manner. We felt it was imperative that we got help for his defensive man. We made some defensive adjustments that helped us cover him and since then we have incorporated them into our regular defensive system.

We believe that it is important to be able to cover the low post more than one way because:
           1. It makes your opponents have to prepare more and keeps them off balance.
           2. We feel that it does not make a lot of sense to cover a player that is not an offensive threat the same
as a player that is capable of getting 30 points on you if given the opportunity.

Because of these reasons, we use several techniques in the low post area, depending on the quality of the opponent that we are facing.
