Basketball is becoming important all over the world. I just returned
from Europe and you'd be amazed at how starved they are for information
about this great game.
My philosophy is
geared toward team play, therefore my topic (setting up a scorer) is
a little against what I preach in my practice sessions. If you do have
a great scorer, however, it is pretty good idea to find ways to get
him the ball. At Louisville our offense is designed to provide equal
scoring opportunity for everyone. In tight game situations we did make
an effort to give Darrell Griffith his chance to control our fortunes.
With such a great talent I felt I'd be remiss if he wasn't put to the
best possible use.
Any offense is good
if your players allow you to use it. If your players aren't intelligent
enough or talented enough to run your normal offense, you must adapt
to their strengths by trying something that can be effective for them.
To be considered good, an offense should be able to be executed successfully
at any level of competition. It shouldn't be designed to take advantage
of a big man because most schools don't have that luxury. A great deal
of one-on-one play should be discouraged because most defenses today
can neutralize this style of play rather easily. To devise a workable
offense, you must evaluate your personnel-take advantage of their strengths
and attempt to hide their weaknesses.
